Learning material

The SafetyLine Institute learning materials include learning guides, readings and resources, and online tests that support the development of required knowledge. For those interested in formal study, this material will help students compile an Assessment Portfolio and will facilitate skills recognition by a participating Registered Training Organisation (RTO).

Learning guides

The learning guide is the key resource for each unit of competency. It provides the framework to assist you to gain competence in the unit and can be used be used by providers in conjunction with a coaching and mentoring programme or as a participants' manual during training.

Units of competency consist of elements of competency and performance criteria, which are reflected in the structure of each  learning guide. Each section of the learning guide covers an element of competency, while each sub-section covers a required performance criterion. The learning guide content explains the requirements of the elements and performance criteria, and contains case studies and activities at the end of each element to assist coaching, mentoring and training.

The learning guides are supported by additional 'Readings', which assist learners to gain the required knowledge for specific competency elements.

Workplace learning

The learning guides are specifically designed to support the development of OHS skills and competencies for those involved in OHS at workplaces.

Those interested in formal study should identify activities in the learning guide that can easily apply to your workplace. Workplace opportunities will provide good evidence of your abilities and competencies that you can add to your Assessment Portfolio. Discuss this with your participating RTO.

Those interested in formal study should also identify any additional learning support you may need such as coaching, mentoring and training in specific aspects. The learning guides have been developed to facilitate self-paced and independent learning, but this does not mean you should attempt to learn in isolation. Your learning will be enhanced if you arrange regular contact with a coach, mentor or trainer. Discuss this with your participating RTO.

Case studies

At the end of each element of the learning guide there is usually a case study to show you how to achieve the performance criteria, apply required knowledge and skills or gain the products and processes that can be used as evidence of competency.  The case studies can be used by coaches, mentors or trainers to show learners 'how it is done' before the learner undertakes the competency related activities.

Activities

After the case study there are activities that are designed to enable you to collect evidence for assessment. Keep a copy of the activities and your work outcomes in your Assessment Portfolio.

Readings and resources

The SafetyLine Institute lists the readings and resources that are available for each unit of competency. These readings and resources provide additional essential material and help you to complete the learning guide activities.

Readings help you gain the required knowledge for specific competency elements and have associated tests designed to make sure you have understood the material. These tests are marked online so that you can receive immediate feedback. The SafetyLine Institute keeps a record of the test results completed by all learners. Once you have logged in, go to Student Record to view your results.  When you have completed the online tests for all the elements of the unit, print a copy of your Student Record for your Assessment Portfolio.

Integrated project and presentation

There is an integrated project and presentation activity in each learning guide. This provides you with an opportunity to consolidate the learning that has occurred as you have worked through the learning guide. Ideally the project will be an application of what you have learnt as applied to a workplace, thus providing evidence of your ability to transfer and apply skills and knowledge to new situations.
